Opal – Electrical Upgrade Summary Opal started as a typical Norfolk Broads cruiser with a basic setup — AGM batteries, limited usable power, and an older inverter system. It worked, but required constant management, especially when off-grid, and struggled to run higher-powered appliances. The upgrade transformed the boat into a modern, fully capable electrical system. The old batteries were replaced with a large 2300Ah lithium bank, supported by a full Victron system including a MultiPlus inverter/charger, Cerbo GX monitoring, solar charging, and multiple DC-DC chargers from the alternators. Solar was upgraded and properly integrated, wiring and protection were rebuilt, and all systems were brought under one intelligent control setup. The result is a system that charges faster, runs more efficiently, and gives full visibility of what’s happening onboard. Today, Opal can comfortably run modern appliances, stay off-grid for longer periods, and requires far less day-to-day management — turning it from a “power-limited” boat into one that simply works.
